History of the discovery: random luck
The polymerization of ethylene was theoretically predicted in 1873 by Russian chemist Alexander Butlerov. The first attempts to synthesize the material were made in Russia, in 1884 chemist H. Gustafson tried to polymerize ethylene in the presence of a catalyst – aluminum bromide. However, in these experiments was obtained unserviceable liquid material.
Then in 1898 a German chemist G. Pehman randomly synthesized polyethylene in the heating diazomethane. In this case, curiosity is that the scientist did not understand that I could synthesize a material that was ahead of time, at least 50 years and corresponded to modern analogues of low pressure polyethylene.
And only in 1933 the efforts of the British chemists Fossett and Gibson was obtained the polymer, which we know today as polyethylene.
