€ 35 million allocated
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Sweden allocated funds for an information campaign to promote a solid waste management project in Lviv, for which the EBRD, together with environmental funds, allocated EUR35 million.
“In Ukraine, over 95% of municipal solid waste (MSW) is disposed of in landfills, 99% of which do not meet EU standards and carry environmental, safety and health risks. In Sweden, in 2018, less than 1% of solid waste was transported to landfills, and more than 99% was recycled, ”said Tobias Thyberg, the Swedish ambassador at the official opening of the program in Kiev.
Within the framework of the project, which is designed for three years, a number of Internet resources will be created, as well as events with the press, the public and non-governmental organizations. The communication agency Noblet Media CIS is implementing the project, and its cost has not been disclosed.
“Today, trash is an element of politics. I would like this issue to be outside of politics, ”Lviv Mayor Andrei Sadovoy emphasized at the presentation.
According to him, after setting fire to the landfill in B. Gribovichi, the city suffered a garbage blockade for almost two years, and the EBRD and other European partners came to the rescue first. The mayor noted that the city is very interested in the implementation of this project, since it annually has to spend UAH 300 million on garbage collection.
Vadim Nozdrya, director of the Lviv Municipal Enterprise (LKP) Green City (Zelena Misto – Ukrainian), as the project manager at the municipal level, said that the city is also actively conducting an information campaign to improve the situation with solid waste, in particular, it organized special classes in schools.
Recall, a year ago, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) published on the website a list of five companies selected to participate in the second round of the competition for the construction of a waste processing plant in Lviv.
