KSCA proposes to build five new treatment centers in Kyiv with solid domestic waste. About this 44.ua reported in the press service of the deputy head of the administration Petr Panteleyev.
Annually in the capital more than 1.2 million tons of solid household waste are generated and only 11% are sorted and sent for processing. About 22% is burned at the Energia plant. This causes a lot of criticism from local residents, however, it is still more environmentally friendly and economical to burn garbage than to bury them on landfills.
Burning garbage at a temperature of 1000 degrees, waste is converted into energy. Burning 1 ton of garbage gives as much energy as 300 kg of coal.
In Kiev will begin sorting of garbage
The main tasks of future centers will be the sorting of garbage into the main fractions: resource-rich components (plastic, paper, glass, iron, etc.), biomass and caloric suor (fuel).
According to the deputy head of KCSA Panteleev, Kiev is aimed at reducing the amount of garbage that will be thrown out to landfills. At the same time, many polygons are critically overloaded.
Where to build processing centers
Now officials have identified five locations where processing and sorting capacities can be created.
“These are the plots near the Energia plant, near the CHPP-6, near the test site No. 1, two sites in the Kiev region: in the north-west direction and in the south of the region. All these facilities will be based on a mechanical-biological method of processing and do not provide for incineration, “said the deputy head of the KSCA.
What will they extract from garbage?
Garbage will be sorted and each faction will find its application.
The first fraction is resource-rich components: metal, paper, polytetylene and plastic, other things that can be realized for reuse and recycling.
The second faction is organic. That is, biomass: food residues, plant waste subject to decomposition. These substances will be converted into biogas due to fermentation. In turn, the gas is converted into electricity and heat.
The third fraction is the remains of paper, wood and other things suitable for burning. Such waste has three times more calories than all the garbage. The mayor’s office explains that the burning of such materials does not damage the environment.
