In Ukraine, 10 million tons of household waste are annually exported, which, if used in the energy sector, could replace 700 million cubic meters of gas annually.
This was announced by the Chairman of the State Energy Efficiency Sergei Savchuk during a meeting with the head of the representative office of the Japanese company Marubeni Corporation in Ukraine Akiyama Tetsuo, during which the urgent problem of waste disposal in the country and the significant potential of using this raw material for energy production were discussed.
“Waste is another important resource for generating energy. Annually in Ukraine, 10 million tons of household waste are exported. Of these, 3.5 million Gcal of heat and 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours can be produced. electricity and, as a result, replace 700 million cubic meters of gas annually, “Savchuk said.
The head of the agency noted that now in the country for the purpose of energy production only 1.4% of all waste is used. Another 5.6% pass only the sorting procedure. The remaining 93% of the waste is exported to landfills.
“It’s time to radically change the situation and take the example from Sweden, where almost half of the waste is recycled, and the other half becomes a source of energy. Only 1% of garbage remains on the landfills, “Savchuk stressed.
In the course of the talks, Savchuk briefed the representatives of the Japanese company on the financial model of processing of 350,000 tons of waste per year developed with the State Energy Efficiency, with full utilization of their energy potential. The facility’s capacity will be 4.5 MW of electricity and 41 MW of thermal energy. The volume of necessary investments will be about 41 million euros, and the payback period of the project is 5.5 years.
