December 2 Carbios the company announced that it has made a big step forward in the development of its enzymatic depolymerization of polyester, which makes it suitable for PET (polyethylene terephthalate), one of the most commonly used polymers. This allows for the first time complete depolymerization products based amorphous PET to the starting monomers, TPA (terephthalic acid) and EG (ethylene glycol).
Representatives of the company say that the process produces monomers to maintain the same quality and physico-chemical properties as their counterparts on the basis of oil. After separation and purification, the monomers derived from the enzymatic treatment process can then be used to synthesize pure PET – avoiding the loss in value of the recycled material, and also produce durable, resistant plastic.
Development is infinitely recyclable, durable plastic – is the holy grail of polymers. Innovative companies are developing closer to the realization of this dream a reality.
