The Israeli authorities intend to completely prohibit the free distribution of plastic bags in all outlets in the territory of the Jewish state, Tass reports.
So, in Israel, from January 1, 2017, a ban was imposed on the free distribution of disposable bags in online retail outlets, and a symbolic fee of 10 agor (one tenth of a shekel, about one and a half rubles) was introduced for them. As a result, the use of disposable packages in supermarket chains in the country has decreased by 80%, and for the whole of 2017 this measure has reduced by 7 thousand tons the amount of plastic waste.
However, the ban introduced in 2017 concerns only retail chains. Clothing and electronics stores, pharmacies and small grocery stores can still give out disposable bags and bags to customers. Nevertheless, the total consumption of this product in Israel in 2017 decreased by 53% compared with the period before the introduction of restrictions. That is, the average Israeli used during the year of 2016 325 packages, and in 2017 – already 171.
At the end of March 2016, the Knesset (Israeli parliament) passed a law banning free one-time packages in trade networks. Earlier each year, Israelis used about 2.5 billion plastic bags, 60% of which came from retail chains. Now, for monitoring, trading networks are required to indicate on checks the number and value of issued packages, and also submit quarterly and annual reports on the turnover of this product.
The Ministry of the Environment of Israel started fighting against the free distribution of polyethylene bags in 2008. Then the agency proposed to prohibit their free issue, and each outlet had to put into the assortment dense reusable plastic packages, which were offered to sell to consumers. But the project was rolled up.
Earlier it was also reported that India plans to completely abandon disposable plastic by 2022.
Earlier it was reported that the decree of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyeva “On measures to further improve the management of domestic waste” from January 1, 2019 in trade and services is prohibited to issue free packages of polymer film. In addition, the country prohibits the production of bags of polymer film, a thickness of less than 40 microns (excluding packages produced for export). Under the ban also imports into the territory of the Republic of the packages of polymer films.
