In Ukraine, they began sorting garbage like the way it is done in the countries of the European Union.

While it is not about the whole country – on November 22, a pilot project on separate collection of household waste in the city of Vyshgorod, that is near Kiev, was launched.

The ideological inspirer and organizer of the project is the Ukrainian Packaging and Ecological Coalition, the investors of the project were PepsiCo Ukraine, FE Coca-Cola Beverages Ukraine, Tetra Pak, Elopak-Fast JSC, Ken-Pak (Ukraine). The partners of the project are the “Rada” SPE and the city authorities of Vyshgorod.

The presentation of the project took place in the building of the city council of Vyshgorod.

“Every year only household waste, we create about 10 million tons, and almost 94% of this waste we send to landfills,” said Vladimir Slaby, the head of the Ukrainian Packaging and Ecological Coalition.

According to him, while garbage dumps are overcrowded, domestic processing enterprises are forced to purchase secondary raw materials abroad.

“The short-sighted treatment of domestic waste generates problems in two dimensions – ecological and economic, we must change this by taking advantage of the experience of the world’s leading countries,” said Slaby.

He also said that the Ukrainian Packaging and Ecological Coalition provides financing for the collection infrastructure (purchase of containers), removal and sorting of packaging waste, organizes an educational and information campaign among the population.

Such work is carried out among the population, including in kindergartens and schools. At the same time, according to the testimonies of the project participants, the greatest success in this business is achieved when communicating with the kids.

Residents of Vyshgorod will throw out packaging waste in special containers of characteristic yellow color, which will soon appear in the city everywhere. The additional money for the installation of these containers from city residents will not be taken.

In this case, the mayor of Vyshgorod Alexei Momot stressed that residents will even pay less for garbage collection, since a significant part of it will fall into the “yellow” containers.

In addition, according to him, a plant for the processing of domestic waste can appear in the city, and the city will also benefit from this, since these are additional jobs.

At the first stage it is assumed that any containers – glass, plastic, paper, metal, will be added to these containers, after which it will be sorted at a special sorting station.

In the future, it is assumed that the separation of garbage by type will occur at the collection points, that is, the city residents will begin to store household waste in various containers in accordance with their types, but the project organizers do not want to go ahead and do not name the timing of the introduction of this practice.

Especially since it is too early to talk about when a separate collection of household waste will become the norm for the whole of Ukraine.
