The new polymer material called polyethylene furanoat (PES), will soon be mass-produced at Toyobo Co. for commercial purposes. Industrial materials maker Toyobo Co. production will soon begin PES resin which can replace polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is widely used in the production of plastic bottles for beverages.

The company said that the bottle with the new material will be lighter and more tight, offering the best freshness of content than in PET bottles. The exchange of technical know-how with Avantium, a startup from the Netherlands, led to the fact that Toyobo has established a system of mass production of a new material called polyethylene furanoate (PEF).

Toyobo will unite with the trading house Mitsui & Co., to send samples for beverage manufacturers and other companies, encouraging them to buy PEF resin, starting in 2017. “We want to replace the PET bottles on PEF bottles in the future”, – the official representative of Toyobo said.

A small amount of air passes through the conventional PET bottle, which is difficult to prevent the oxidation of the product. PEF allows only one-tenth of the amount of air ,, say company representatives. “The resin retains its functionality even when it is processed into a thin layer that allows light plastic bottles,” – said company officials. According to the information by Toyobo, the company produces PEF only from materials of plant origin, which will reduce carbon emissions in the manufacturing process.
