Ukraine can join 40 countries in the world, in which plastic bags are removed from everyday use. Such a decision has the right to be adopted by the Verkhovna Rada, and therefore deputies of the Kyiv City Council appeal to it, the organ’s press service reports.
“Today, at the plenary session of the Kyiv City Council, the deputies decided to send an appeal to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the need to adopt a law prohibiting the use and sale of plastic bags,” the report said.
It is noted that the initiative belonged to the public. An electronic petition on the need to ban polyethylene packaging was posted on the Kyiv City Council’s website, and it was supported by a standing commission on environmental policy. However, the fate of polyethylene can only be decided at the state level.
“In Ukraine, there are more than 500 plastic bags per person per year. The decay period of one is more than 100 years. This leads to pollution of the environment, causing clogging of streets, green and coastal zones, reservoirs, “- said the deputy of the Kyiv City Council Konstantin Yalova.
Recall that the capital of Belgium, following the Walloon region of the country, has banned the use of disposable plastic bags. Since September 1, none of the city’s retail outlets has the right to purchase such a package. At the same time, previously purchased packages, the owners of retail chains and stores could use only until the end of November.
