As the head of VASA Rimantas Yuknavicius has noted, the purpose of this is not to reveal more violators, but to change the behavior of people and their habits in the disposal of garbage

Over two months in Vilnius, 115 violations occurred on 66 container sites for the disposal of garbage, the press service of the Administrator of the Vilnius waste system system (VASA) reports.

They were fixed with six cameras.

According to VASA Director Rimantas Yuknavicius, the project was implemented at the end of last year and already has positive results. He noted that after the installation of cameras, people began to behave more responsibly.

Now Vilnius is patrolled by employees of the VASA waste control agency, which assesses the state of the container platforms. CCTV cameras are installed in places where waste is improperly disposed of. If during the week no violations were observed, then the devices are transferred to other platforms.

Yuknavichius clarifies that the purpose of the service is not to catch as many offenders as possible, but to ensure that the residents correctly dispose of garbage and the containers remain clean.

VASA said that the cameras recorded how the residents of Vilnius leave old furniture, electrical appliances, tires in containers or near them, but large domestic waste should be taken to special collection points.

It is noted that improper waste disposal can be fined up to 600 euros.

Last year, a “rubbish crisis” broke out in the Lithuanian capital when it turned out that the situation with waste treatment was unfavorable and was practically on the verge of an emergency. The companies – the carriers of the waste did not cope with the duties and allowed violations: not empty at a time garbage containers, dirty sites for waste, unlabelled containers.
