The future waste processing complex will be built in the industrial zone of Lviv, near the treatment facilities.

Construction of the first in Ukraine waste recycling complex should start in Lviv in the spring of 2019. However, almost every stage of the project is faced with resistance from the central government. According to “Channel 24”, recently the chairman of the Lviv regional administration, Oleg Sinyutka, made a new attempt to disrupt the construction of a waste treatment plant in Lviv. On February 3, he met with the residents of Ascension – Lviv microdistrict, which is located one kilometer from the future waste processing facility, and said that the technology for recycling that Lviv introduces is incorrect. What is known about the construction of a garbage processing complex in Lviv?

The future waste processing complex will be built in the industrial zone of Lviv, near the treatment facilities. The project takes into account European environmental standards, because it is financed and controlled at all stages of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Lviv uses technology that also works in neighboring Poland. It provides for the absence of harmful emissions and even a bad smell – thanks to special ventilation. The nearest residential building is more than a kilometer away from the place where it is planned to build the plant. Why did the need arise to build this complex? In May 2016, a large-scale fire occurred at the Gribovitsky dump.

Under the rubble of debris killed three rescuers who tried to put out the fire. After the tragedy, the dump was closed. Owing to the tragedy, Lviv and 4 other districts of the region did not have a place where they could take out the garbage, therefore city and regional authorities signed a memorandum with the mayors of 19 cities of Lviv region, which provided for the recycling of garbage for two years at the landfills of the region. However, in fact, a large-scale garbage blockade began. The construction customers believe that the governor’s statements about the waste processing complex have election motives.

Political analyst Alexei Minakov said that the priority question for Andrei Sadovy as a presidential candidate is, in fact, the issue of building a waste recycling plant. Accordingly, they try to slow down this process with the hands of certain persons in order to discredit the Lviv mayor.

“We need to understand who the chairman of the Lviv Regional State Administration is: this is a non-electoral office, Sinyutka was appointed to her by decree of Petro Poroshenko in 2014. Obviously, whose instructions he fulfills,” Minakov is convinced. Now the assessment of the future impact of the plant on the environment is on the expertise in the Ministry of Environment. “I can confidently say that there is no danger from the construction of a recycling plant.

Everything is designed in accordance with environmental and sanitary standards. In addition, modern filters and equipment will level the plant’s activities, ”said Lyubomyr Zubach, people’s deputy from the Samopomich party. Meanwhile, Lviv citizens agree that the city needs such a plant. Despite the resistance of the central government, all expertise and tender procedures in Lviv are planned to be completed at the end of April 2019. At the same time, construction work is likely to begin.
