Waste storage plans to make safer
The authorities decided to introduce a number of modern technologies for household waste management to make Ukrainian landfills safer for the environment and human life. The revision of state construction standards (GOS) for the design of landfills for household waste was reported in the press service of the Ministry of Regional Development, Construction and Housing and Communal Services.

“Crowded landfills are a big problem for Ukraine today. This is not only about the terrible stench that they create. In the case of neglect and improper handling of waste at landfills, the use of inefficient waste storage technologies, these territories become not only unsuitable for any life activity, but can also pose a great threat to our lives, as well as provoke an environmental catastrophe – contamination of the soil and air from hazardous substances and gas that is released as a result of the rotting of this garbage, ”said Lev Partskhaladze, the deputy head of the department.

According to him, the ministry has already developed a number of proposals that are planned to be introduced into the new GOS.

Thus, in the new standards it is planned to prescribe:

requirements for mandatory landfill reclamation after filling it;
mandatory device for radiation monitoring of waste;
new approaches to calculating biogas production volumes at landfills for the possibility of using alternative energy sources;
expanding the use of artificial anti-filter screens and clear requirements for determining the volume of filtrate in the adjacent territory of the landfill;
clear requirements for the height of landfills, their slopes, the location of roads and routes, the placement of industrial and other household waste at landfills;
the possibility of using technologies for deodorizing landfills, as well as geosynthetic drainage materials in order to avoid leakage of leachate.
