Ecologists sound alarm, because with each year the amount of debris increases
In the capital, an ecological scandal is brewing because of the garbage. Residents of the Kiev region are concerned that the polygon No. 5, where the garbage is taken to Moscow, is overcrowded and is afraid of emergency, as in Lviv, when a large fire occurred on the landfill. In addition, people are worried that a dangerous filtrate will enter the water. Environmentalists are sounding the alarm, because with each year the amount of debris increases and soon a garbage collapse may occur.
POLYGON. The mayor’s office says that the polygon No. 5 is already loaded by 90%. “Now we are carrying out anti-emergency work there – the slope is being strengthened so that there are no blockages. We are working to increase the capacity of the filtrate processing system that has accumulated at the landfill. Now the system processes 200-240 liters of toxic filtrate a day, we plan to increase it by one third, because the locals complain about the unpleasant Smell, “- explains Julia Literate, assistant deputy head of KSCA Petr Panteleyev.
In the plans of officials – to close the polygon, but the question arises of creating an alternative place, where to put all the garbage. The authorities are already planning to build several garbage processing plants in the city. “Now possible locations for their erection are being studied, but specific places are not yet determined,” the Literate explained.
TO CHERNOBYL. One of these days there was an information that the authorities say they want to take out the garbage to Chernobyl. But in the State Agency for Management of the Exclusion Zone, we were explained: “A working group has been established that is studying the possibility of using the exclusion zone not for garbage, but for the storage of household waste (residues after processing or incineration).
We were assured in the mayor’s office: “We had a task to study the situation with garbage, including the possibility to keep it in the exclusion zone.” But after examining the question, they found out: by law this is forbidden! Therefore, Kiev does not offer to take out the garbage to Chernobyl. Capacities on the European technologies “.
Environmentalists assure that the storage of such waste in the exclusion zone is theoretically possible. “They can be stored in a hermetically sealed tank without contaminating soil and water, but for this, laws need to be settled,” said environmentalist Alexander Sokolenko. He also stressed that urgent need to solve the problem with garbage. “In Kiev, 12% of all garbage is produced in Ukraine, and only 4% of the country is processed, and the problem can be solved by constructing waste processing plants,” the ecologist added.
