Heads of EU environmental ministries have approved the beginning of the process of ratification of the Paris agreements on climate change, adopted in December 2015. Thus, an agreement ratified by countries responsible for more than half of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions.

“This is a historic event”, – he told reporters the Minister of Environment of France Segolene Royal at the end of the meeting of Ministers of the college in Brussels. “What was once thought impossible for someone to become a reality,” – said President of the European Council Donald Tusk.

For the entry into force requires ratification by the parliaments or governments of the countries responsible for at least 55% of global emissions of carbon dioxide.

With the completion of the ratification of the EU (the procedure should take about a month) in the 55% barrier will be overcome.

The agreement was signed at a conference in Paris in 2015 and became the first in the history of global and binding agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Paris conference was attended by representatives of 190 States. The signed document 170 countries, including the US, China and Russia.

Under the agreement, all signatories commit to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, as well as to prevent global warming by 2100 by more than 2 degrees Celsius.

The document provides for the allocation in 2020 to developing stranam100 billion dollars to fight against harmful emissions.
