The European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union, previously proposed the use of plastics containing DEHP, for processing into new products, such as shoes and floor coverings. DEHP as a plasticizer is added in rigid PVC compounds.

DEHP is recognized as carcinogenic foods that cause infertility.

Although DEHP is banned chemical safety regulations EC (REACH), the European Commission proposed the EU member states to approve the utilization of old plastics with DEHP for the manufacture of new PVC products.

“It is unacceptable to allow a potentially numerous cases of male infertility just to processors and producers of PVC simply reduces the cost of production of low-value items for the competition with imports of low quality,” – said in a resolution.

The resolution was adopted by vote (603 voted against the truce, 86 people – for, 5 abstentions).
