Imagine that you came to the store and saw: many products are sold in one special packaging – an edible film. From time to time, parchment and ordinary polyethylene disappeared somewhere, freeing up space for packing the future …
“Wait,” you will say, “but what about the dirt around, how will I eat this film, and why?” Many people ask this and similar questions, not taking into account the main feature of such a package: it is ecological, safe and biodegradable. What does this mean?
Not so long ago, BSU scientists developed an edible film, and thanks to cooperation with OJSC “Borisov Polymer Packaging Plant” Polymiz “large-scale production of edible packaging became possible for all interested companies.
The main component of the edible film is starch, there are other natural food ingredients. In everyday life, starch is used both in the food industry, and in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical. This is a natural and safe material, thanks to which the film becomes really edible. The other side of this set of components is environmental friendliness. You do not need to eat a film, you can simply throw out the packaging, because it does not require additional disposal and decomposes for 4-12 months under the influence of the environment. Considering that polyethylene and plastic are one of the main materials polluting the planet, just imagine that there will simply be no waste from such packaging!
In addition, the edible film is good for packing sticky sweets, marmalade and even as a substitute for wax for fruit. Barrier packing allows to increase the shelf life of products, it is very convenient to use. These are just a few of the possibilities of the film available today.
Already, the plant provides samples of edible film of various sizes and densities to partners in Belarus and abroad. Honey, confectionery, diet, sports nutrition and others – very many understand how important it is to keep pace with the times, improving their products, production, technology. Undoubtedly, edible film will change the look at the package as a whole and will open new ways for the development of this industry.
