Prices were influenced by a EUR58 / t increase in styrene prices in November on the back of a slight decrease in PS supply, in part due to increased exports to Asia and increased demand.

Meanwhile, spot prices for polystyrene ranged from EUR970 per tonne to EUR1,050 per tonne for PSS / M, and for OPS / M – at the level of EUR1,070 to EUR1,150 per tonne. The wide range of spot prices discussed in the PSA / M focused mainly on levels approaching or exceeding EUR1,000 per tonne.

Demand for household appliances remains strong, and packaging demand remains strong amid coronavirus restrictions. Construction demand is still stable in November but may decline in December as year-end projects approach the seasonally quieter winter months.

General purpose PS is used in food packaging, disposable tableware, cutlery and various other commodities. Impact polystyrene is used in consumer electronics and toys, and extruded polystyrene is used in the construction industry as insulation.

According to MRC’s ScanPlast, in Russia, the estimated consumption of PS and styrene plastics for the first nine months of this year amounted to 362.82 thousand tons. The decrease relative to the consumption indicator for the same period last year amounted to 1%. In September, the total estimated consumption in the country was 48.69 thousand tons, which is 13% more than in September 2019.

European polystyrene (PS) contract prices rose in November on the back of rising styrene feedstock prices, a slight decline in supply and strong demand, ICIS reported.
