According to Exxon’s senior vice president, Jack Williams, \u201cpolymer packaging outperforms alternatives from other materials in terms of sustainability.\u201d<\/p>\n
The company claims that plastics use less energy than other raw materials, citing a study conducted by analysts at Franklin Associates with support from the American Chemistry Council (ACC) industry group. According to the study, manufacturers of alternative materials generate five times more waste and consume more water, so \u201cplastics do less harm to society and the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n
Exxon management comments contrast with measures taken by governments and companies in many countries to reduce the environmental impact of waste from disposable plastic products, including bags, straws, and disposable tableware. According to a report by the International Energy Agency published in 2018, the total amount of plastic waste in the oceans will more than double by 2030 without significant changes in recycling policies.<\/p>\n
Exxon CEO acknowledges that plastic waste is an \u201cimportant social issue\u201d that needs to be addressed.
