The new law, signed on Earth Day, will come into force on March 2020 and will help reduce environmental pollution.

Estimates show that New Yorkers use 23 billion plastic bags per year, while national studies show that about 50% of disposable plastic bags fall into the trash.

In addition to preventing pollution by plastic bags of the environment, the ban will help reduce the conditional greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production and recycling of plastic bags, ranging from the oil used to make the packages to emissions during transportation of packages to landfills.

The New York State Department of the Environment (DEC) will work with stakeholders and community leaders to distribute reusable bags to low- and middle-income communities and environmental justice, which will better implement the new law.

In March 2017, Governor Andrew Cuomo formed a New York State task force on plastic bags led by Department of the Environment Commissioner Basil Seggos (Basil Seggos). The task force met several times to develop a unified, comprehensive and fair solution to the problem of plastic bags. The group’s final report identified the impact of disposable plastic bags and proposed various legislative options that can help develop a statewide solution to the problem.

The new law restricts the sale of disposable and in-store plastic bags at any point of sale and ensures the exclusive jurisdiction of DEC in all matters related to plastic bags.

According to the new law, bags for clothes, garbage bags and other bags used for packing or storing certain products, such as fruits and sliced meat, are not subject to the new law. In the US, in addition to the state of New York, California and Hawaii also banned the sale of disposable plastic bags.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said: “You see plastic bags hanging on trees, driven by the wind through the streets, in landfills and in our waterways, and there is no doubt that they are causing enormous damage. Twelve million barrels of oil are used to produce plastic bags that we use every year, and by 2050 there will be more plastic in weight in the oceans than fish. We need to stop using plastic bags, and today we have put an end to this disease in our environment. ”

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo (Andrew Cuomo) signed a law banning the sale of disposable plastic bags in the state.
