In the Federal Republic of Germany, the share of recycling garbage into a useful turnover is 66 percent, while on average in Europe this figure is 46 percent. The results of the study of the German Institute of Economics (IW) on Wednesday, April 18, published the newspaper Die Welt.

According to the study, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands are among the leaders in Europe in terms of recycling of garbage: in these countries the share of waste return is more than 50%. In the middle of the ranking are Sweden (48.9%), France (41.7%) and Spain (29.7%). The list is closed by Greece and Romania – 17% and 13.3% of waste are sent for recycling here, respectively. At the same time, the worst indicators for Malta: the share of garbage in the country is only 7.1%.

Germans produce too much rubbish

At the same time, experts from the IW subjected the Germans to criticism: they produce more garbage than the average for Europe. So, from 2015 to 2016, the total amount of waste in the European Union has decreased by 4%, while in Germany this indicator, by contrast, increased by 11%. According to statistics, each German produces 626 kilograms of garbage a year, which is associated with a high level of welfare in the country. On average in Europe, this figure is 482 kilograms per person.

The European Union intends to increase the volume of waste processing

Today, the European Parliament must pass a vote on the adoption of a new draft law on waste processing. According to the document, by 2025 each EU state should increase the share of waste return to 55%. At the same time, by 2035, 65% are planned as the norm.

Experts IW are skeptical about the future of the new bill. If in subsequent years all EU countries increase the share of waste return as much as before, only 10 states will be able to fulfill the task, the report says. The rate on the improved processing organization would be realistic only if countries could start with a lower rate and create a new infrastructure for garbage disposal.

In a useful turnover in Germany, 66% of the waste is returned, which is much higher than in other EU countries.
