We would like to bring to your attention these and other events of July in TOP of the main news of the packaging market from independent reviewer Vera Bokareva.
Foreign developers were pleased with interesting novelties in the field of packaging.

Biodegradable antimicrobial packaging from Lithuania

Engineers of the Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) in Lithuania created a biodegradable material for food packaging, which, they claim, keeps the food fresh for longer.

Paulius Pavelas Danilovas, a researcher at the Department of Chemistry and Polymer Technology of KTU Paulus Pavelas Danilovas, emphasizes: “Most food packaging is made from plastics that are obtained from non-renewable sources, they do not have the ability to biodegrade. More than half of the packaging waste is not recycled. ”
Danilovas notes that the goal of the developers was to create a biodegradable package with antioxidant or antimicrobial properties. The use of cloves in the formulation of active ingredients of essential oil promotes the binding of free radicals, thus, the oil enriches the package with antioxidant properties. This helps to keep the food fresh longer.
In order to achieve an antibacterial effect, KTU scientists apply ionic silver particles to the cellulose. Such a packaging film becomes more flexible and durable. The participants of the project call the development of a major breakthrough in the production of flexible packaging, since cellulose did not have good thermoplastic properties. The modified cellulose, developed by them, decomposes for about two years. Composites used for packaging are not toxic.
Materials were tested by Lithuanian companies. KTU seeks to translate the results into a commercial basis.

New patented technology for the production of aluminum bottles in asymmetrical shape

Montebello Packaging (Canada) has developed and patented its own technology, uShape. The patented technique allows to create bottles of asymmetric shape, which can give the brand more individuality.

Unbreakable bottles of aluminum have excellent barrier properties and are convenient for transportation. The new uShape technology makes it possible to produce bespoke aluminum bottles of an individual shape. Manufactured in accordance with it bottles of individually asymmetric shape will be available in the market in the last quarter of 2017. The product will be launched in the North American market.

At present, according to this technology, bottles with a capacity of 250 and 355 ml can be made. The bottle is suitable for portioned packaging, it can be printed on up to 9 colors. In printing technologies, matte and glossy effects can be used.

Kathy Mercer, director of sales for food and beverages, notes that the main advantage of this technology is the ability to shape one’s own brand identity. Asymmetry will help the manufacturer stand out on the shelf.

Aluminum is 100% recyclable. According to Keti Merzer, about 70% of the aluminum currently in circulation is recycled material.

According to the forecasts of the developers, interest in the asymmetric form will increase. They plan to make improvements in the direction of expanding form capabilities, using various design effects and increasing the volume of bottles.

Eco-friendly cardboard box for food with the possibility of regulating the temperature inside

HelloFresh from Berlin released a box for a set of food, 100% made from recycled cardboard. It is a box with isothermal properties, in its manufacture the northbox technology is used. This package is also fully recyclable. It is easily assembled and disassembled, it is a corrugated box with an insulating layer, available in different sizes. The cardboard used for production is FSC-certified.
The lining with isothermal properties is fixed with the help of glue on a water basis. The encased metallized layer is completely safe for health, completely suitable for processing. The insulating layer is made in three basic modifications, each of which provides a certain temperature range – from cold to warm.

A beverage box with a valve that prolongs the shelf life of the product and facilitates disposal

Muchtar Ismailow, inventor and general manager of K-Bis Studio, a small family company operating on the Polish market, presented the novelty. His idea was based on the prevention of spoilage after their discovery. He notes, often a few days after consuming a small amount of juice or milk, the packaging with the remains of the beverage is discarded due to the fact that the product is spoiled.

Its development was based on two directions: the creation of a compressible package and the development of a valve that will provide a seal when the package is compressed.

Ismailov says: “First I created a compressible box, then I started work on the valve. The task was to create a valve that is 100% sealed. ” It is possible to place the mechanism inside the housing with a standard cover. When you start in mass production, the price for such a package will be 30% more expensive than models with standard covers.

The valve is made of the same materials as the standard packaging. The essence of the valve operation is as follows: when the lid is closed, the internal valve provides full tightness. When the lid is opened, this valve opens, which helps the drink to flow freely. At the same time, the valve blocks the ingress of air into the package. The shape of the valve may vary depending on the type of product for which it is used. The I-Pack design helps the user adjust the power of the jet.
The company received a European patent, which includes a comprehensive solution in four areas:

After emptying the package, its folded structure facilitates folding, so that the empty bag can be flattened, it takes up less space when recycling;
Provision of easy dosing of liquids;
Sealed valve prevents uncontrolled spillage of the product;
Thanks to such packaging after opening the drink lasts longer fresh.

Such packaging solves several environmental problems at once: it facilitates the sorting of waste and allows prolonging the shelf life of the product.

New barrier films without chlorine

Toray Plastics (America) brought to the market two types of ultra-barrier film. Lumirror MK61HB and PA1HB with a barrier coating of polyester film are an alternative to foil, films with polypropylene.
MK61HB due to metallization provides a good barrier to moisture, oxygen. PA1HB also reliably protects the product from oxygen. Both these films have good aromatic resistance.

The film is made on the basis of the PET produced by Toray, which has good thermal stability. Such films without chlorine content are a good alternative to polyvinylidene chloride. If it is necessary to ensure a high level of tightness, Toray can integrate the sealant layer with an extrusion coating. Barrier function coating can be performed by metallization or extrusion coating, depending on the specifics of the product being packed and the requirements of a particular customer.

The metallized MK61HB and the basic barrier film PA1HB are intended for use as an outer layer in a double-layer laminate or as a middle layer in a three-layer structure. They are suitable for packing coffee, confectionery, bakery products, for packing hygiene products, household chemicals.

The Spanish group of chemists invented polycarbonate based on lemon and carbon dioxide

There were concerns about the use of BPA (bisphenol A), one of the components of the production of polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins, as a raw material for polycarbonate. For example, in countries such as France, Denmark and Turkey, banned the use of polycarbonate based on BPA. Although BPA has been reclassified by US and European agencies as safe, some studies indicate that it negatively affects the endocrine system, is a neurotoxic and carcinogenic substance.

In Spain, they decided to use citrus fruits as a natural raw material for polycarbonate resin. A group of chemists, led by Arjan Kleij of the Institute of Chemical Research of the Catalan Institute of Research and Advanced Projects, developed limonin. Kleicz notes: “BPA is safe, but still causes certain problems and is produced from petroleum raw materials. We suggest replacing it with lemonade, which stands out from lemons and oranges, which is more ecological. ” He emphasizes that BPA can be replaced gradually, first a small amount of limonin is added, later BPA is completely replaced.

It turned out to create a polymer, not just more eco-friendly, but also having improved thermophysical properties. This is a good achievement, because the bioplastics in its thermophysical properties is usually inferior to classical polymers. The new polymer has a high glass transition temperature, it is safe, since it requires high temperatures for melting. At present, a group of engineers is negotiating its introduction into mass production.

New protective solution for verifying the authenticity of pharmaceutical products

Covectra has developed identification marks that contain unique patterns from stars randomly arranged. The GS1 2D barcode solution is based on two-dimensional barcoding technology. Technology allows real-time verification of the authenticity of goods, track its logistics path using a mobile application developed by Covectra.

StellaGUARD labels can be applied in virtually any package and with any material. They are designed as an adapted solution for compliance with the requirements of the EU Directive on combating trafficking in counterfeit medicines. The tags are integrated with the Covectra EPCIS AuthentiTrack certified database.

The system will be used to quickly verify the authenticity of medicines and to detect substandard products. Steve Wood, president of Covectra, notes: “Because barcodes can be easily copied, the new solution eliminates the possibility of introducing counterfeit drugs to the market, which is especially important for the pharmaceutical industry.”

A user can scan a 2D barcode using a mobile device. The application software then identifies and verifies the barcode. After authentication, the consumer can also receive individual marketing messages from brand manufacturers.

Forecast: the growth of the market of injection molded plastic in the Gulf countries will provide packaging

According to Transparency Market Research, the market for injection molded polymers in the Persian Gulf countries (Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain) will grow at an average annual rate of 8.3% by 2023. According to the forecast, by the end of 2014, 52% of the volume of injection molding was accounted for specifically for packaging. By the end of 2023, the packaging will account for 56%. The development of this segment will be positively affected by an improvement in trade activity, growth in industry and consumer goods.

Technologies of production of injection molding plastic packaging will be improved: resistance to wear and mechanical damage will be improved, and the shelf life of the product will be prolonged. As the report shows, in realizing the potential of the market of injection molding plastics in the Persian Gulf region, Saudi Arabia will become the most profitable country. Further, the UAE and Kuwait are following the potential for increasing demand for injection molded plastics.

However, experts caution that demand in some periods may fluctuate due to economic and political instability.
In Russia, plastic bottles for alcohol more than 1.5 liters are prohibited

The government of our country has prepared amendments to the law, according to which the retail sale of alcohol in packagings of more than 1.5 liters is prohibited from July 1, 2017. The production of alcohol in plastic containers of more than 1.5 liters is prohibited since January 1, 2017.

The bill, as stated in the official document, aims to establish a phased ban on the production, turnover and retail sale of alcoholic beverages in consumer packaging (consumer packaging or packaging made entirely of polyethylene, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate and other polymeric material).

Along with this, the government proposed to amend the Code of Administrative Offenses, which determine the amount of administrative fines for violation of the ban. Thus, for the production and sale of alcohol products in a prohibited container of officials, it is proposed to punish a fine from 100 thousand to 200 thousand rubles. “With or without confiscation of objects of an administrative offense”. Penalties for legal entities will vary from 300 thousand to 500 thousand rubles. Along with the possibility of confiscation of “subjects of an administrative offense”.

In conclusion, an express tape of other interesting events in July:

A new package for nasal spray with electronic control has been developed;
The forecast is published: the world market of biodegradable paper until 2021 will grow by 11% annually;
Scientists from the Plekhanov Russian Economic University created biodegradable compositions based on polyethylene and various plant fillers;
In Sri Lanka, disposable dishes and plastic packaging will be canceled.

New biodegradable films have been invented, labels have been developed that facilitate the verification of the authenticity of medicines, and the technology of manufacturing asymmetric aluminum bottles has been patented.
