\"\"Players in the European polystyrene market (PS) are negotiating an increase in July contract prices of EUR20-35 per tonne compared to June contracts amid rising costs of the main raw materials – styrene, ICIS reports citing sources in the market.<\/p>\n

The first contracts for polystyrene for general use (MSS \/ M) were agreed at EUR35 per tonne higher than June.<\/p>\n

Opinions about market demand were mixed. Some sources said that demand in July looked promising, although in some cases there was a slight seasonal slowdown, which is expected to become more pronounced in August due to summer vacations in most southern European countries. According to the manufacturer, after the first five working days of July, orders for substations were 7% higher than in early June.<\/p>\n

Prices for most raw materials declined, and July contracts for styrene rose due to a short-term spike in the spot market due to force majeure at the Ellba plant in the Netherlands. The capacity of this plant, which Shell manages through a joint venture between Elba and BASF (50:50), is 550,000 tons of styrene and 250,000 tons of propylene oxide per year.<\/p>\n

In June, prices of MSS \/ M were at USD2 220-2,240 per tonne, FD EU. Prices of high-impact polystyrene (UPS \/ M) were in the range of USD2,220-2,340 per tonne, FD EU.<\/p>\n

According to the Price Review of ICIS-MRC, Russia continues the preventive shutdown of Gazprom Neftikhim Salavat (GNS). According to the plan, the stop should last until the first half of August. On the spot, polystyrene for general purpose production of GNS is practically absent. One of the contract buyers suggested that the STS had formed the necessary volumes to fulfill its contractual obligations during the idle period.
