We would like to bring to your attention these and other events of March in TOP of the main news of the packaging market from Vera Bokareva
The global packaging market was pleased with the invention of new technologies and materials.

Packages for cooking in a washing machine are invented

Israeli student Iftach Gazit (Iftach Gazit) has developed a line of food packages Sous La Vie, which are used for cooking food in a washing machine.

The creator was inspired by the method of preparing sous-vide (French “in vacuum”) – a method of cooking, in which the product is placed in a special plastic bag, tightly packed, after which the bag is put in water at a specified temperature (below the boiling point). The product is prepared longer than standard methods, the temperature is only about 55-60 ° C for meat, for vegetables it is slightly higher

Sous La Vie vacuum bags are made of waterproof Tyvek paper, which prevents soap from getting into food. The favorite dish can be prepared by throwing such a packet with food in the washing machine along with the laundry.

The inventor gives an example: “Instead of preparing a meat semi-finished product in a microwave oven at a temperature of 58 ° C, you can set the” synthetics “mode in the washing machine. The duration of this washing program is enough to prepare it. So, to prepare a vegetable dish should choose the program “cotton”.

Packages Sous La Vie are equipped with instructions for use, which are stylized as labels with information about washing on objects of clothing.

Smart shelves: new possibilities of intellectual packaging

Intelligent Packaging, a member of the Stora Enso group, the world’s largest supplier of packaging solutions and biomaterials, has developed the concept of a rapidly installed smart shelf.

For the consumer, the use of this engineering solution is expressed in the following: when he takes the goods from the shelf, an interactive video appears on the screen telling about the properties of the goods; If the buyer takes in hand two goods at the same time – a comparison of their characteristics is displayed on the screen. The manufacturer of the product, in turn, can observe in real time what products the consumers watch for what time.

These and other possibilities are realized by using a radio frequency identification (RFID) label in the package – a micro-chip capable of receiving and broadcasting signals. The shelf itself is equipped with built-in antennas that catch information about which goods are lifted from the shelf, and broadcast relevant materials.

The Smart Regiment acts as a virtual seller, providing communication with the buyer before the purchase. This development is suitable for conducting promotions, organizing temporary stores or as a stationary shelf in a store.

According to Toomas Greenbaum, the manager of the project of intellectual packaging in Packaging Solutions, this development helps not only to qualitatively advertise the product, helping the buyer choose the optimal product, but also to reduce the number of complaints, returns of the goods. Accordingly, to increase the level of customer satisfaction.

To install such a shelf in the store requires only a power connection. The shelf is made of Re-board cardboard – a thick, dense, at the same time, light, durable and environmentally friendly material. Design shelves, video and audio materials about the product are developed in close cooperation with the manufacturer. At present, this concept is tested by the developers’ clients.

New adhesion promoters for polymer materials have been developed

Tramaco, part of the Rowa Group holding, has realized for its customers the possibility of surface treatment with Trapylen / Trapur compounds, which allow to determine the adhesion characteristics of the obtained material, which facilitates the selection of the optimal adhesion promoter for the corresponding process.

A conventionally suitable adhesion promoter is selected as follows. The surface is applied with an adhesive compound. Then, cuts are applied to the material, which is then fixed to the adhesive tape. This method makes it possible to estimate the adhesion strength of the coating to the surface, but it is difficult to obtain quantitative data on the adhesive strength by means of it.

The Trapylen / Trapur series activators withstand this test. For film materials, the adhesion strength is determined by the tensile / peel test method. For injection molding products, this test method is not applicable, and the resulting values can vary greatly due to the imposition of other factors, for example, tensile forces.

Tramaco GmbH uses Lumifrac from LUM, which simplifies the adhesion test and produces reproducible results. The device has the following principle of operation. A punch is attached to the surface of the injection plastic product or a film treated with a primer layer. The design is placed in the measuring cell of the centrifuge. The sample is centrifuged until, under the action of the centrifugal forces that arise, the punch does not separate from the substrate. Based on this, the bond strength of the punch to the substrate is determined, expressed in Newtons. This method allows simultaneous measurements on eight samples. The measurement process takes only a few minutes.

The project on development of antimicrobial surfaces for packaging has started

The European consortium NanoPack has provided the European Union with 7.7 million euros for the implementation of the project, which aims to demonstrate, evaluate and test food packaging with antimicrobial surfaces based on natural materials. The consortium NanoPack includes 18 organizations – leading industry and research institutes from Belgium, Austria, Israel, Germany and other countries.

The Nanopack project is headed by the Israeli Technion Technological Institute (Tel-Aviv). The project received funding as part of the framework program of the European Union “Horizon-2020” for research and innovation. It is called upon to cope with scientific, technological, economic difficulties, security problems and legal norms. In technical developments, emphasis will be placed on extending the shelf life of products by using new antimicrobial surfaces in the package.

Coordinator NanoPack and assistant professor Technion Ester Segal (Ester Segal) emphasizes: “NanoPack will demonstrate solutions for extending storage times by using new” smart “antimicrobial surfaces in” active “food packaging. The NanoPack project will increase the safety of products for consumers by significantly slowing the growth of food-borne microorganisms, which will prevent outbreaks of foodborne infections and premature spoilage. ”

In these developments, polymer composites based on natural halloysite nanotubes (GNT) will be used as a reliable and safe carrier, which will promote the targeted release of biologically active substances.

GNTs are unable to migrate from the package to food because of their size. SNT in the NanoPack food packaging gradually releases into the space above the product small amounts of active, volatile, natural, EU-approved essential oils. These oils demonstrate antimicrobial and antifungal properties, slow down the multiplication and growth of most microorganisms.

Developed innovative mineral paper

Japanese company Nippon Paper Industries Co has developed innovative material Mineral Hybrid Fiber. The main raw material for its production is wood pulp with the addition of minerals. The innovativeness of the material lies in the fact that such paper contains up to 90% of the minerals. In the manufacture of Mineral Hybrid Fiber, a composite of mineral particles of cellulose fibers is created by dense bonding of mineral particles on the surface of the cellulose fibers.

Based on this technology, the company plans to produce a large range of materials with a variety of characteristics: cellulose, paper, decorative film for laminate. Along with this, mineral paper Mineral Hybrid Fiber can be used for the production of non-combustible wallpaper and interior partitions, deodorized sanitary and hygienic products.

New HDPE for thermoforming

The American company Total Petrochemicals and Refining has released a new low-density polyethylene (HDPE) 9825E.
According to the manufacturer, the new plastic is suitable for thermoforming packaging in the food industry and public catering, where the main requirements for it are a high degree of rigidity and strength.

HDPE 9825E creates the strength necessary for thermoforming, so that manufacturers are able to produce less weight packaging while maintaining the strength of thermoforming materials. Along with this, it is possible to increase the strength of the material while maintaining the usual tare weight. In addition, this material is shockproof, resistant to chemical attack, has a small permeability for water vapor, improved optical quality and glossiness.

It is important that it fits into the trend of environmentally friendly packaging materials, suitable for processing in various recycling systems. Total specialists note that HDPE 9825E is suitable for making cups, bowls, serving bins and yogurt cups.

Danone and Nestle plan to sell bottled water from wood

Danone and Nestlé Waters created the alliance NaturALL, the main activity of which is the production of water in bottles made of wood. Such environmentally friendly packaging will have to replace environmentally unsafe plastic bottles. For example, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is used for the production of plastics, which consists of ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. Such an acid is obtained from fossil fuels, the process consists of 6 or 7 stages.

The NatureALL association entered into an agreement with the Origin Materials start-up, which reduced production to 4 stages, and uses cheap and environmentally friendly materials instead of expensive crude oil, such as pine wood.

In 2008, this startup received $ 70 million in investments. By 2018, NatureALL and Origin Materials are planning to build a factory with a production capacity of 5 thousand tons of plastic, which is at least 60% of biologically pure materials. In the future, developers are planning to increase this figure to 95%. Thus, large world companies, for example, the brand of beer Carlsberg, are considering the possibility of switching to cardboard packaging. And one of the leaders of the market of household chemicals Unilever announced a strategy aimed at the fact that by 2025 all plastic packaging of the company will become “reusable, processed or biodegradable.”
On the domestic market, attention is still drawn to banning beer in
PET packaging

PET packaging for beer with a volume of more than 1.5 liters. Can return

As we remember, on January 1, 2017, the changes to 171-FZ came into force. According to them, since the beginning of this year, a ban on the production and turnover of alcoholic beverages in a package of polymer material, if its volume exceeds 1.5 liters, has been enforced.

The Union of Russian Brewers appealed to Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Khloponin with a request to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages in PET bottles larger than 1.5 liters for export supplies. The letter noted that “while developing this restriction, the export component of the brewing industry of the Russian Federation was not taken into account.” The participants of the appeal reminded that Russian brewing companies actively supplied beer in PET volume more than 1.5 liters to China, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan and other countries.

Brewers note the growing demand for brewing products in PET in China and Mongolia. So, following the results of the first half of 2016, the export of these products to the PRC increased by 26%. Representatives of the industry emphasize that there are no objective reasons that require the ban on production in PET-containers of more than 1.5 liters for export to countries where the volume of PET-containers is not limited. From the draft amendments in 171-FZ, proposed by the brewers, it follows that the art. 11 and 26 of the law. This will allow to produce and sell alcohol products in PET bottles outside the Russian Federation. The appeal of the brewers will be considered by the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Economic Development.

The press service of the Ministry of Finance said that the ministry “does not object to allowing the production of beer in PET bottles of more than 1.5 liters in order to export them.” The Rosalkogolregulirovanie focused attention on the fact that the issues of state policy are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Finance. Rospotrebnadzor notes that the draft law proposed by the union “does not provide for mechanisms and methods (special marking or other) guaranteeing the prevention of the release of these products into circulation on the territory of the Russian Federation”. Also, Rospotrebnadzor recalled that 171-FZ does not establish the concept of “turnover outside the Russian Federation”.

It can be assumed that the idea of allowing PET containers for beer for export can be supported provided that a control mechanism is created that excludes the possibility of getting it into the domestic market.

Author: Vera Bokareva

Thanks to the new packaging, food can be cooked in a washing machine, new mineral paper and HDPE for thermoforming are developed, smart shelves are tested.
