The situation in the second half of the year is unclear, say market players.

The next year, should increase the supply of ethane and polyethylene in North America on the background of the new capacity that does not add optimism to local vendors. On the other hand, some market participants believe that the import of polyethylene in North America will have no effect because of too low prices in the region. Thus, the weak euro at the end of this year, made the North American PE sellers to send it on sale in more favorable regions. Market players do not expect that to change in the first half of 2017.

As for the more short-term perspective, PE prices in Europe may grow significantly in January. Thus, the PE vendors warn customers about the three-digit growth of quotations in the next month. Manufacturers want to improve their profitability, regardless of the monomer price increase in January.

Due to the growth of quotations of naphtha December ethylene contract prices increased by EUR45 per tonne. Already it expected to increase in the January ethylene contract prices for EUR30-50 per tonne.

The margin between the ethylene and polyethylene price dropped steadily in recent months. But buyers are skeptical that vendors will implement a three-digit increase in the PE prices in January, as the market may not be as dynamic for that.

According to the price review ICIS-MRC, in Russia on the buying activity in the local PE market last week was very low. Most of the local processors have closed all of its transactions for the December supplies of PE. The processors have started to prepare for the New Year holidays.
Lower prices for HDPE market and LDL continued under pressure of oversupply. JHA on the market price situation remained unchanged. We started negotiations on PE January contract prices.

European prices for polyethylene (PE) are the lowest in the world and it is expected that it has an impact on the volume of imports in the next year, especially in the first half of 2017, according to ICIS.
