Now new polymer technology is being mastered on a small section of the Odessa-Reni M15 highway. Provided that a good result is obtained, the application of the technology is also possible on other roads.
For the first time in Ukraine, on roads of national importance, modern technology HіMA (highly modified asphalt) is used to repair pavement on a site with heavy traffic of heavy trucks. The repair takes place on a small section of the Odessa-Reni M15 highway, km 48 + 400 – km 48 + 800, near the “Mayaki – Conveniently” checkpoint on the Ukrainian-Moldovan border.
Access to the checkpoint is a place of slow traffic, including a significant amount of heavy vehicles. And although this site was repaired by another contractor in 2017, significant rut has already appeared on the surface. To solve this problem, the Road Service in the Odessa region turned to the “Highway-South”. After examining the indicated area, the company’s specialists suggested putting reinforced asphalt mix pavement on highly modified bitumen (HiMA) on this section.
HiMA, by its properties, is best suited for the device of the lower and upper layers of pavement in places of slow movement and stops of heavy vehicles. To modify the bitumen, a SBS Kraton ™ D 0243 polymer modifier was used in a significant amount – at least 7.5 percent of the weight of bitumen.
HiMA is widely used in the world. Polymer modifiers work well in various temperature conditions. For example, in 2013, on the eve of the World Cup, roads in Qatar were made from such material. In 2014, high-modified asphalt paved the road in Alaska. HiMA was used in the construction of runways and taxiways at the airports of Wroclaw, Katowice, Prague and others.
That is, HiMA asphalt concrete is an alternative to cement concrete in its characteristics and should be the best suited for the problematic section of the Odessa-Reni road.
Highway-South specialists have already milled old asphalt concrete pavement, stained a new two-layer coating using highly modified asphalt mixes: a leveling layer of coarse-grained asphalt concrete 10 cm thick and an upper layer of crushed stone-mastic asphalt concrete (ЩМА-20) 5 cm thick.
