The specialty chemicals group LANXESS is expanding its line of highly filled polymers and polyester synthetic plastics for the production of highly durable structural elements. For polyamide 6 range, sold under the names Durethan BKV 60 EF and the XF, the company added a polyamide 66 with 60% glass fiber content. New polyamide will be produced under the brand name Durethan AKV 60 XF, the high-performance injection molding combines the advantages of easy-flowing highly filled compound with the advantages of polyamide 66.
“The new material is characterized by excellent strength and rigidity. It opens up a whole layer of new possibilities for designing plastic and metal parts (by hybrid technology) as well as for the production of semi-finished composite material reinforced with continuous fiber. At a pressure of 13,300 MPa (in accordance with the technological requirements, at room temperature), the elastic modulus of the material – that is, its characteristic rigidity – twice the rate of standard polyamide 66 Durethan AKV 30 H2.0, glass fiber content of which is 30%. “Our innovative materials enable customers to produce parts with thinner walls compared with the items that have been made of polyamide 66, reinforced with 30% glass fibers. At the same time received the details differ similar mechanical characteristics, and reducing the thickness of the wall construction creates additional opportunities to reduce their weight, “- says Ralf Heinen.
In comparison with “akin” polyamide 6 with the same content of fiberglass, a new structural material highly filled polyamide 66 expectedly provides a high resistance to chemical attack. When this bending temperature under load (ISO 75-1, -2) in this material is 250 ° C, which is nearly 40 ° C higher than that of a polyamide 6.
“Moreover, the maximum continuous operation temperature of 180 ° C, which is about 40 ° C higher than the grades of polyamide 66 with standard thermal stabilizer. Another advantage of the new material are its technical characteristics. In spite of the high content of fiber material has the same fluidity as that of polyamide 66 with 35% glass fiber content. Also, injection molding may be carried out at the same temperatures. Depending on the geometry of the resulting parts, mold cooling parameters and process conditions, frequently form parts can be extracted before. This is due to the fact that the compound is characterized by high rigidity even at high temperatures and conducts heat better. Furthermore, the new polyamide 66 may be used as a metal replacement in automotive parts, located in the engine compartment. Among the possible applications – valve covers, oil pan and transmission components of the engine, all kinds of brackets and tubes intake manifold. Furthermore, the material can be used to create the motor and connecting rod bearings in the chassis.
